A new TV by the Numbers report reveals the rather bleak fate of The Good Wife for a possible season renewal.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan's Character Jason Set To Exit?

According to recent TV ratings revealed for CBS legal drama, it is slipping and sliding down. When compared with the show's performance this time in season 6, the ratings are down by 23 percent, according to TV by the Numbers.

Yet, the report suggests that the ratings are not a prime decider for the future of The Good Wife and that it is very much considered a stand alone show for CBS. Many a times, it has also been labelled a vanity or prestige project for the network, which gets CBS the critical laurels. But lately even the critics are losing interest in the show and are demanding the it up its game.

Could Hillary Clinton Guest Star In An Upcoming Episode?

But there have been rumors of this being the last chapter for the show. Earlier this year, Variety reported that the showrunners of The Good Wife were set to write a new show for CBS. The report revealed that the new show, Braindead, will air next summer and will have a run of 13 episodes in the first season.

Showrunners Robert and Michelle King also dished about the show in a press statement. "We wanted to do a show that was a mix of genre-pulp and highbrow politics - 'The Strain' crossed with 'The West Wing,'" the Kings said. "It seemed like the best way to address the news today - not straight, but as the opening act of a horror movie."

Although this does not necessarily mean The Good Wife might be in danger as the Kings might be investing their energies in the new show, the CBS legal drama might suffer a little bit on account of this. It has also been speculated that The Good Wife is getting nearer to its end, with rumors of the show being concluded in two more seasons.

Previously, TVLine got exclusive information that Julianna Margulies, Christine Baranski and Matt Czuchry's contracts with the show have been renewed for a much longer period. But the report also adds that this news should be taken with a pinch of salt and doesn't confirm that the show will run through an eighth season.

The next episode will air on Dec. 13 on CBS.
