Kristen Wiig officially signed on to the cast of Anchorman 2, joining fellow Saturday Night Live alum Will Ferrell who plays the lead character of Ron Burgundy.

Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues is expected to hit theaters by Christmas 2013. Actress Christina Applegate was the first to leak the news of Wiig's casting on her Twitter account.

“So excited Kristen Wiig has joined our cast for anchorman2. Going 2 b best movie ever made. Besides the best movies ever made,” she wrote.

Adam Kay, who signed on to direct the film, confirmed the news as well by posting on his Facebook page, “Kristen Wiig is officially on board for Anchorman 2.”

Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, Ferrell, Applegate, and David Koechner will all be back for a second helping of the film about reporters at Channel 4 Evening News. It is rumored that Wiig in the film will play the love interest of socially awkward meteorologist Brick Tamland (Carell).

Wiig, 39, made a break from doing comedic sketches on SNL once she realized her movie star potential following the success of the comedy Bridesmaids. The Judd Apatow film grossed $26 million in its opening weekend with total earnings of $288 million worldwide.

In a recent interview, Ferrell revealed details of what fans can expect to see in the upcoming sequel.

"We are going to focus on and comment on the transition from what was kind of traditional news to where entertainment forces started melding in, and Ron's going to be one of the catalysts of that," Ferrell said.

The actor and comedian told ABC News that his Ron Burgundy mustache attracted a great deal of attention on the street and that he's always surprised by the kind of questions people ask about it.

"I'm surprised by how many people have walked up to me and asked, 'Is that mustache real?' Of course. I say, 'Yes, why would I be wearing a fake mustache?' I mean, why would I be walking around wearing a fake mustache?" he said.
