DC Comics announced on Thursday that classic heroes Superman and Batman will fight crime together in a series.

The two characters will join forces in the series titled Batman/Superman that will be released in June.

The series will be written by longtime Marvel writer Greg Pak and illustrated by Jae Lee. The new story will focus on how Batman and Superman first met.

Pak talked about the chance to tell the important story of the characters together and that DC gave him plenty of room to work with.

"It is a real thrill, and it's particularly a thrill because we're being given some real leeway to do some really important storytelling with these characters. It really defines some great things and to depict some really key moments for them," Pak told USA Today about the comic.

He added that the series will be "a really exciting place to discover who these guys are, and the things we're going to discover particularly in this first story arc will have ramifications later on down the line. We're going to start in the past but it'll reverberate through. It'll be big and crazy and tons of fun."

The series will take place in DC's re-launched universe, known as The New 52, according to Comic Book Resources.

Details of the comic are being kept secret but it will reportedly show how the characters' first interactions shaped the future storyline.

The timing of the launch is auspicious as the new Superman reboot, Man of Steel, hits theaters in June alongside the comic.

Both characters previously starred together in a comic series titled Superman/Batman, according to Entertainment Weekly. The popular series began in 2003 but the comic places Batman in the top billing.

Batman and Superman have been DC staples since the late 1930's.
