Director Zack Snyder recently spoke on what the conflict ultimately boils down to in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

How The Controversial 'Man Of Steel' Ending Informs 'Batman v Superman'

Snyder, who directed the film in addition to its predecessor, Man of Steel, spoke with Empire about how the dynamic between Batman (Ben Affleck) and Superman (Henry Cavill) is really quite simple.

"In a lot of ways Batman v Superman is a very personal concept," he said. "It is just two people trying to understand each other's point of view."

Snyder also discussed the process of Christopher Nolan (who directed The Dark Knight trilogy) transferring the franchise to him.

"You tell me if you don't want me to do it," Snyder said he told Nolan at the time. Nolan replied, "Well, we don't own these characters. When you're done making Batman movies, someone else will [make them]."

But it wasn't an easy process of letting go for Nolan.

"I think he found it a little bit hard," Snyder revealed. "I would feel the same way."

The Dark Knight trilogy helped revive Batman as a film franchise, after the critically panned 1997 film Batman & Robin. The movies garnered major critical and financial success and Heath Ledger posthumously won an Oscar for his portrayal of The Joker in The Dark Knight.

Snyder seems to be continuing the dark, gritty aspects of Nolan's vision for the Batman universe, but he is also putting his own artistic flare on the series.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is scheduled for release in theaters on March 25.
