The recently released Independence Day: Resurgence trailer gives away much more about the storyline than the first one.

The trailer which was actually unveiled at the recently held CinemaCon in Las Vegas has finally hit the internet. Previously we relied on various reports to give us a sense of the trailer, but now we can see it for ourselves. The new trailer gives a whole lot of context to the storyline and also reveals some backstory for the characters.

Old characters like David Levinson (Jeff Goldblum) and former President Thomas J. Whitmore (Bill Pullman) are seen in the clip, but the more interesting revelation is Steve Hiller's (Will Smith) death. In the trailer we see Levinson telling Hiller's son, Dylan-Dubrow Hiller (Jessie Usher) that his father was the bravest man he had ever known, the camera pans to a photo of Steve Hiller with his family, implying that that Smith's character is dead.

"On this day in 1996, the world escaped the clutches of extinction," President Elizabeth Lanford (Sela Ward) says, addressing a large audience.

She goes on to state that that war made the world better equipped and armed to deal with such crises. "We found the technology to deal with a stronger and safer earth," she says. "Because our survival is only possible when we stand together."

"We had twenty years to prepare, so did they," runs the tagline.

Levinson is seen tracking a distress call from the aliens, marking their return and intent to strike for another invasion. At one point, as they see the aliens making peculiar noises, someone asks why they are screaming, to which Dr. Okun (a returning Brent Spiner) responds that they are not screaming, but "celebrating."

Independence Day: Resurgence will open theaters on June 24, 2016, with the actual Independence Day just around the corner.
