Contrary to recent rumors, Rockstar Games did not announce any new titles for its most prominent franchises in the recently-held E3 2016. Though the absence of the highly-anticipated Red Dead Redemption 2 was quite surprising, the lack of any Grand Theft Auto 6 announcements in the gaming event did not come as a surprise at all.

According to speculations, this is simply because the GTA franchise has an update cycle of about five to seven years. For example, GTA IV was released in 2008 and its sequel, the immensely-popular behemoth of a game that is GTA V, was released in 2013.

Some cycles, however, lasted much longer, with GTA III being released in 2001 and GTA IV being released in 2008. Though GTA: Vice City and GTA: San Andreas were released in the yers between these two titles, the actual cycle for the flagship games was a staggering seven years.

With this in mind, fans are speculating that the tentative date for the release of the next flagship title would be sometime in 2017 or 2018. Indeed, if this speculation is accurate, it would not be surprising at all to see GTA VI being announced within the next two years.

Other rumors seem to add credence to this assumption, as some speculations have suggested that Rockstar is already starting development for the next Grand Theft Auto title. The rumors further suggest that the game would not be featuring the United States anymore. Instead, the next GTA title would feature a more foreign location, probably London or even Tokyo.

In fact, speculations are abounding that Rockstar actually explored the possibility of setting a GTA game in Tokyo at one point. However, due to the different traffic and road systems in the Asian superpower, as well as possible issues about branding and the like, the option of setting a GTA title in Japan was eventually scrapped.

Regardless of whether these rumors are true, however, Rockstar has had a pretty good reputation for the quality of its titles so far. Thus, GTA VI, no matter where it is set, would most certainly be a bestseller as soon as it is released.
