As the console wars spill over into the next generation, Nintendo and its upcoming flagship gaming machine, the enigmatic NX, has been sparking a lot of interest from fans and casual gamers alike. Absent during the recently-conducted E3 2016, the Nintendo NX is pretty much still highly classified, with almost nothing known about the machine until today, save for its unveiling that is set in March 2017.

However, a recent leak that surfaced recently might confirm a rumor that has been going on for quite some time now. One of the most prominent speculations about the Nintendo NX is the notion that it would abandon discs and instead bring back the utilization of dedicated game cartridges.

According to the rumor, Nintendo of America has recently filed trademarks for the NX's upcoming flagship game, the highly anticipated and well-received The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. What was allegedly interesting about the trademark was the fact that Nintendo's patent listed both discs and cartridges of the upcoming Zelda title.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is set to be released for both the Wii U and the Nintendo NX. Since the Wii U exclusively utilizes discs for its games, fans were quick to speculate that the patent for the Zelda cartridge was specifically for the Nintendo NX.

While Nintendo is currently using cartridges for its flagship handheld gaming device, the New 3DS, the company is yet to announce if The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, would see a handheld release. Indeed, with the new Zelda title seemingly designed to be the "killer app" of the NX and the swan song of the Wii U, strong signs are pointing to the notion that Nintendo is releasing Breath of the Wild exclusively for the company's gaming consoles.

If this is indeed the case, there is a very good chance that the Nintendo NX would indeed go back to the basics, utilizing cartridges just like its predecessors. Then again, the gaming cartridges today are far more advanced and faster than those used in the olden days. If the Nintendo does utilize cartridges, the NX would definitely be a very unique, compelling gaming console for this generation.
