The scheduled launch of the Nintendo NX is coming, but the Japanese gaming giant has managed to keep practically everything about its next-generation device a closely-guarded secret. However, a recent patent filing might suggest a few clues about the device, or its controller, at least.

The patent, which Nintendo filed  on June 30 with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, was labeled as a "handheld information processing apparatus," which has led fans of the gaming giant to speculate that it might very well be the controller of the NX.

The design of the device in the patent features a touchscreen in the middle, as well as a vibration system and a couple of speakers. The handheld is rectangular with a traditional button layout, complete with a d-pad and a circle pad, as well as Nintendo's traditional A, B, X and Y buttons.

What is particularly interesting is the fact that the design exhibited in the patent is very similar to the lower half of the gaming firm's popular handheld console, the 3DS. Thus, while speculations are high that the device might be the NX's controller, some Nintendo fans are alleging that the patent might be showing the 3DS' successor instead.

However, the 3DS is a dual-screen device; thus, the likelihood of the patent showing the 3DS's successor is quite slim. With this in mind, many are convinced that the patent might very well be the Nintendo NX's controller.

One of the reasons behind this is the notion that the Nintendo NX would be a console, handheld hybrid, which would enable gamers to play console games through the device's controllers even while on the go. Thus, with the device in the patent does fit the bill.

The Nintendo NX has pretty much been a mystery since the Japanese gaming giant confirmed its existence. Despite the lack of information being released to the public, however, Nintendo has assured its fans that the wait would be worth it, and that the NX would once more feature something very new to gaming.
