U.S. fans of Star Trek Into Darkness will get to see the film one day earlier than expected.

The release date for Star Trek Into Darkness has been moved up to May 16, according to Access Hollywood.

According to IMDb, Paramount made the decision based on the popularity of IMAX "sneak peek" sales. These viewings, which will be held on May 15 at select IMAX theaters, received such an overwhelming response that the studio decided to open the film nationwide only hours after.

The studio reports that "sneak peek" showing in Los Angeles, New York City, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Seattle, Austin, San Francisco, Houston, San Diego and Minneapolis are already sold out.

However, for those seeing the film in IMAX, there are 30 minutes of footage filmed with IMAX camera's, creating crisper, screen filling scenes, according to TrekMovie.

While many fans may be excited to get into an earlier screening, Hypable points out that fans who may have brought advanced tickets will be disappointed at not being able to see the film opening night.

Star Trek Into Darkness is directed by JJ Abrams and features returning series actors Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin, John Cho, Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldana, and Bruse Greenwood.
