Two sequels, The Hangover Part III and Fast & Furious 6, are squaring off against each other this weekend at the box office, with early predictions suggesting the latter will come out on top.

Projections ahead of the release dates suggest that Fast & Furious 6 will rake in over $100 million over the four-day Memorial Day weekend.  The action flick is currently in its sixth incarnation and remains more successful than ever before, with the series' previous entry, Fast 5, making over $600 million worldwide.

"Fast & Furious 6 arrives on the scene packing more punch than any franchise rightfully should on its sixth lap," said Jeff Bock, Exhibitor Relations senior box-office analyst. "But this isn't your average Part 6, is it? 2 Fast 2 Furious didn't have Vin Diesel and Tokyo Drift didn't have either of the stars, so 6 really is 4 with Paul Walker and Diesel."

The Hangover Part III opened wide to over 3,000 theaters Thursday night, but the comedy only scored $11 million from midnight screenings The number is considerably lower compared to the huge $31 million Thursday night opening of The Hangover Part II.

MTV is projecting that the comedy will make $80 million this weekend, down from the $117 million opening of Part II.

Hangover studio Warner Bros. is billing the film as the last in the franchise, but with over 100 rotten reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences may be disappointed with the trilogy ender.

Hoping to attract a different audience, 20th Century Fox is releasing the family-friendly animated film Epic. Produced by Blue Sky Studios (Ice Age, Rio), Bock noted that the film won't attract adults or teens, but "families will be there in force."

He predicted: "Epic could tally up $33 million this weekend and as much as $40 million over the long holiday."

Also playing in theaters this weekend are last week's box office winner Star Trek Into Darkness, Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby and Iron Man 3, the latter of which recently crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide.
