Lindsay Lohan and Kim Kardashian have been in headlines lately and director Baz Luhrmann  came to their defense at the Sydney premiere of his film The Great Gatsby in Moore Park on May 22.
Luhrmann said at the premiere that he is rooting for Lohan to regain her former promise as a "talented actress."
The 50-year-old Australian movie director revealed that he and Lindsay go way back:
''I have known Lindsay since she was very young. She's a talented girl. I pray that she can bring herself back to the place where she came from because she is a talented actress. I feel for her, I really do," Luhrmann told Australian TV personality Lawrence Mooney, who hosts talk show Dirty Laundry Live on ABC2.
Lohan is currently in the middle of her court ordered 90-day lock-down in rehab at The Betty Ford Clinic, which she accepted as part of a plea agreement with Los Angeles County prosecutors. She was ordered to do 30 days of community service after her stay, as part of her probation. Judge Dabney allowed her to complete that in New York.

This is Lohan's sixth stint in rehab.

Lohan pleaded no contest to two misdemeanor charges stemming from a May 2012 car accident. The actress must also participate in 18 months of psychotherapy and two more years of probation.

Luhrmann also expressed his support for tabloid star Kardashian. The reality TV star was slammed for her pregnancy fashion choices recently.

''I met her the other night, about two weeks ago. I had dinner with her and Kanye at a friend's place. She's an extraordinarily elegant woman, pregnant. I was really struck by her grace," Luhrmann said of Kardashian.

Kardashian was maligned for her choice of dress at the Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum in New York on May 6 when she wore a floral Givency gown by designer Riccardo Tisci, who also came to Kardashian's defense.
