Skyfall director Sam Mendes may be on tap to direct the 24th Bond film, reports Deadline.

It is rare that the Bond franchise chooses to retain directors from film to film (with the exception of John Glen) but Mendes provided the iconic British spy with unprecedented success at the box office during 2012.

After grossing more than $1.1 billion worldwide, the Skyfall helmer originally stated that he was uninterested in playing the spy game twice despite being offered the gig, according to Huffington Post.

"Was I willing to go straight back into a room with a writer and start work on the same set of characters and the same scenarios as I've been working on for the last three years? No. The idea made me feel physically ill," Medes previously told The Guardian.

Instead Mendes moved onto work on two stage productions, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Shakespeare's King Lear.

However, Sony and MGM are reported to be in talks with the director, and Deadline's report makes it sound like Mendes is more than likely returning for another go at 007.

Mendes is apparently in talks with the film's producers Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli to head another Daniel Craig adventure, according to Deadline. The studio appears to be ready to wait to start production on the John Logan penned script until Mendes is free of his other obligations.

However, TheWrap reports that Mendes' publicist has denied the director's involvement twice recently, once on April 24 and again on May 9. Sony and MGM had no comment to give to Deadline.

If Mendes were to return, fans would most likely see a continuation of the excellent cinematography, pulse pounding action sequences and character depth that Skyfall delivered.
