Fast and Furious 6, which is number one in the box office for the past two weeks, inspired fans to rent luxury race cars recently, reported CBS News.

The film series follows the high-speed adventures of an underground street racing club and the most recent installment of the highly successful franchise has taken almost half a billion dollars at the box office worldwide thus far.

Vin Diesel reprises his role of Dominic Toretto in Fast and Furious 6 in which his character and Brian, played by Paul Walker, are commissioned by Hobbs, portrayed by Dwayne Johnson, to reassemble their crew in order to defeat a mastermind who runs an organization of mercenary drivers across 12 countries. If they are successful in the endeavor, they will be pardoned.

Jordana Brewster, Michelle Rodriguez and Tyrese Givson co-star.

Rob Ferretti, who runs Gotham Dream Cars, noted that driving the expensive cars fulfills a fantasy for many of the customers.

Gotham Dream Cars offers raceway rentals, cross-country tours and other adventures. One event called a Dream Car Sprint held in Nyack, N.Y., attracted more than 150 people. Each person in attendance paid $100 to fulfill their fantasies for just a few minutes during the shortest and least expensive event offered by the Gotham.

The customers drive luxury race cars for four laps around a parking lot during the Dream Car Sprint.

"We're selling the reality version" of a dream, Ferretti said.

"Jumping over a highway overpass to catch somebody in mid-air, it is pure Hollywood, so this experience allows people to do something that is achievable," he added.

Most people would never be able to afford to buy a high-end vehicle such as a Lamborghini or Ferrari, Ferretti explained, but such events allows customers the opportunity to drive one, if even for a brief amount of time.

Adam Silverman, who races the cars, told CBS News' anchor Jim Axelrod that the cars are "a little bit faster than my Hyundai."
