2oth Century Fox is bringing back 9 To 5 in a reboot and with a new writer onboard. Original cast Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and Dolly Parton are eager to reprise their characters in the film.

Cast

Fox is in the early stages of creating a reboot of the 1980 comedy with original writer and creator Pat Resnick eyeing Parks and Recreation star Rashida Jones to cowrite the screenplay for the movie. The studio is also tapping the original trio to reprise their respective roles. Parton (Doralee Rhodes), Tomlin (Violet Newstead), and Fonda (Judy Bernly) have expressed interest to star in the reboot.

21 Laps' Shawn Levy, Jonathan Baruch of StoryBy Entertainment, and Resnick have already signed to produce the 9 To 5 reboot.

Story

9 To 5 follows the story of three secretaries who try to make a name for themselves in the corporate world. They aim for promotions but the sexist men in the workplace, especially their chauvinistic boss Franklin Hart, Jr., played Dabney Coleman, undermine their efforts. Dabney blackmails Parton's character into sleeping with him but she makes other plans instead. She and her gal pals hatch a scheme to kidnap their narcissistic and lying boss. They keep him tied up as they uncover that he has been embezzling money and they try to cash in on his illegal scheme.

The classic film was a huge hit. It grossed a whopping $103 million and landed the second spot on the domestic box office after The Empire Strikes Back. The film was also turned into a Broadway musical in 2009.

The 9 To 5 reboot will still circle in on the same concept of sexual harassment in the office. However, the plan is to add a trio of new young actresses who will play victims of the assault. The original trio then will play mentors after the women turn to them for help in getting even with the male higher-ups. They will guide the young women on how to properly deal with the sexist men in their workplace.

20th Century Fox's plan to make a reboot of 9 To 5 is very timely with the recent onslaught of sexual harassment and abuse allegations in Hollywood. Women who have been sexually manipulated in the workplace have spoken up against their accusers, empowered by the #MeToo campaign and #TimesUp movement that help provide the victims with legal aid.
