A video of actress Alicia Silverstone chewing food and giving it to her son directly from her mouth is stirring debate over the hygiene implications of the practice.

A YouTube posted on March 20 shows Silverstone feeding her 11-month-old son Bear Blue as they sit on the couch. Once she's done, she smiles to the camera.

A few days later in a post from her blog The Kind Life dated March 23, Silverstone explains what the meal contains but doesn't explain why she feeds him the way she does.

"I just had a delicious breakfast of miso soup, collards and radish steamed and drizzled with flax oil, cast iron mochi with nori wrapped outside, and some grated daikon. Yum! I fed Bear the mochi and a tiny bit of veggies from the soup...from my mouth to his. It's his favorite...and mine," Silverstone wrote.

"He literally crawls across the room to attack my mouth if I'm eating. This video was taken about a month or 2 ago when he was a bit wobbly. Now he is grabbing my mouth to get the food!"

A doctor commented told Fox News after observing the video that "it doesn't seem like a hygienic practice."

Several posters on Silverstone's site expressed no qualms about the feeding style.

"Mama bird feeding her baby bird! LOL" wrote one user, while another wrote it's "better than eating off the floor."

Another poster admits to doing the same with "my little one who is just starting to eat solids, though I chew the food up for him and put it in front of his face."
