The Wolverine is projected to destroy its competition at the box office this weekend as the only major film in its first week of release.

The Wolverine made $23 million on Friday, easily becoming the No. 1 film of the day and is expected to gross $61 million by the end of the weekend. The latest Wolverine film is Hugh Jackman's sixth performance as the X-Men mutant. It's mostly positive critic reviews will only help the film going forward.

Last week's top grossing film, The Conjuring, is expected to fall to No. 2 this weekend. The horror film made close to $7 million on Friday and is projected to make $19 million over the course of the weekend. The film has already made back its $20 million budget and is on its way to grossing over $100 million total.

Currently in its fourth week, animated sequel Despicable Me 2 has been one of the summer's top grossing movies and is expected to come in at No. 3 this weekend. It made $4.7 million Friday and is expected to make about $17 million this weekend, pushing it beyond the $300 million total mark.

Turbo, another animated film, is projected to come in at No. 4 this weekend. Though the film has had a much slower start than Despicable Me 2, it grossed about $4 million Friday with a $13 million weekend projection in its third week of release.

Adam Sandler comedy Grown Ups 2 will round out the top 5 in its own third week of release. The film made $3.6 million on Friday and has an $11 million projection for the weekend, putting it over the $100 million mark.

As for the weekend's other newer releases, The To-Do List, starring Parks and Recreation's Aubrey Plaza is only opening in 591 theaters this weekend and is expected to make about $2 million.

Indie drama Fruitvale Station has expanded to over 1,000 theaters in its third week of release and is expected to gross at least $4 million.
