Following the announcement that Emmy Rossum and Tom Holland will feature in an Apple TV+ program playing mother and son, fans cannot believe it. They pointed out that the performers are just ten years different in age so for them to play such roles opposite each other seems wrong.

Hollywood fans are perplexed by this recent casting choice. Emmy Rossum, 35, was cast opposite Tom Holland, 25, in the forthcoming Apple TV+ anthology series "The Crowded Room" on Feb. 22, as reported by Hollywood Life.

According to Deadline, Emmy will portray Candy Sullivan, while Tom will portray Candy's son, Danny Sullivan. Given that the actors are just ten years different in age, viewers understandably questioned why the "Shameless" veteran is portraying the mother in this new production with the "Spider-Man: No Way Home" star.

"Emmy Rossum is 35. Why on earth is she playing Tom Holland's mother??" one fan said in disbelief.

Another confused fan also wrote, "I do like Emmy Rossum but why hire a 35 year old woman to play the mother of a 25 year old? Why not hire an older actress? Just a thought!"

A different fan, who was similarly dissatisfied with Emmy and Tom's casting chemistry, highlighted that this is not a simple casting issue. The fan claimed that this is a huge Hollywood problem with age and gender.

While Emmy Rossum at 35 is certainly not too young to be a mom (she is in real life), she's definitely too young to be a mom to someone in their 20s!

The fan tweeted, "stop casting young women as the mothers of men who are like less than 10 years their junior when we're still casting men who are 55 as leads who romance 25 year old women."

Clearly, fans are not pleased with this casting choice. However, others have speculated that Emmy may not be portraying Tom's mother in the show's current narrative, but rather in flashbacks.

"I'm just gonna assume Emmy Rossum plays Tom Holland's momma in a flashback ... because otherwise I'm gonna turn to dust in my chair If that's the case," one person said on Twitter. Well, if the flashback situation is true, then this all makes much more sense," one fan wrote.

According to Deadline, "The Crowded Room" will consist of ten episodes and will "examine inspirational stories of folks who have fought with mental illness and learnt to live successfully with it." Danny, Tom's character, is partially based on Billy Milligan, the first person to be acquitted of a felony for having many personalities. Rya, a professional psychologist, is going to be played by Amanda Seyfried.
