Brian Laundrie's parents received a lawsuit for allegedly trying to hide the truth about Gabby Petito's death, and it led them to be called "heartless" by a criminal defense lawyer.

The Laundrie-Petito case reached a new development after the family of the late YouTuber filed a civil lawsuit against Christopher and Roberta Laundrie. But amid all that, a criminal defense lawyer recently tagged the couple as "heartless" for hiding the truth.

In a new interview on NewsNationNow's "Banfield," criminal defense attorney Joe Tacopina tagged the Petito family's lawsuit as baseless. Still, he called Laundrie's parents heartless for never answering the authorities' queries.

"The fact of the matter is, it doesn't give rise to a claim. They're not alleging here that Laundrie's parents knew about the plan to kill Petito, or cover it up. It's just that they knew and they were heartless because they didn't answer," Tacopina said.

He added that, although Chris and Roberta knew Petito's death all along, Tacopina explained that the YouTuber's death is not a good reason to sue them. The attorney said that both Chris and Roberta also have rights under the law. Their attorney, Steve Bertolino - who continuously spoke in public - said that he instructed them not to say anything about the case.

Brian Laundrie's Parents Also Knew Fugitive's Whereabouts

Aside from Petito's death, Chris and Roberta have been previously accused of hiding their son and not disclosing his location.

On October 21, the parents finally joined the search and sparked rumors after finding Laundire's remains immediately despite the fact that the authorities had been searching the area for weeks. This led people to assume that they had something to do with the death of the fugitive.

Former FBI agent Jennifer Coffindaffer and News Nation Now's correspondent Brian Entin once had an in-depth conversation about Chris and Roberta, as well as their connection to the case. At that time, experts said that a discarded item or deleted text could easily cause them to receive charges.

"Do I think that they're probably going to be charged with the evidence we have out in the public? No, but the FBI could have more information pertaining to an obstruction charge," Coffindaffer said.

Chris and Roberta were also criticized as the public pointed fingers at them for allegedly helping Laundrie.

One of the most plausible theories showed an image of the patriarch holding a white bag similar to what the authorities found in reserve. At its bottom, a hard rectangular object was seemingly placed under other belongings inside the bag.

But as of press time, none of these issues has since been proven true.
