Fresh off his turn as Gellert Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, actor Mads Mikkelsen is back in his home country, set to star in a Danish historical epic tentatively titled King's Land.

The prolific actor, who has long maintained a steady career starring in big-budget Hollywood projects, alongside smaller Danish ones, reunites with A Royal Affair director Nicolaj Arcel for Zentropa film company's biggest movie in years.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, King's Land "follows the attempt by Danish King Frederik V to take, cultivate, and colonize an unforgiving area populated by wolves and highwaymen. Mikkelsen will play Ludwig von Kahlen, a military captain determined to tame the wild lands for the king."

The film is set to begin production September 5, 2022 in Denmark, Germany, and the Czech Republic.

In a statement given in Variety, Mikkelsen said of King's Land:

"It's an important and fascinating chapter in Danish history about to be adapted for the screen and carrying topics still relevant to this very day. Besides, it is a thrilling story and quite an adventure."

Arcel and Mikkelsen's previous collaboration for A Royal Affair netted the Dane an Oscar nomination and two awards at the Berlin International Film Festival. When asked about working with Arcel again, Mikkelsen gushed:

"I am beyond excited to be working with him once again. He has an awe-inspiring vision for the film, and he and Anders Thomas have penned an amazing script. Its brutality and tenderness deeply moved me when I first read it."
