Director George Miller has been taking audiences into the wastelands since 1979 with his nomadic hero Mad Max as the throughline character. But after the wildly successful fourth film in the franchise Mad Max: Fury Road roared into theaters in 2015, fans have been craving more high-octane thrills from the storied director.

It was announced some time ago that the female badass Furiosa, played with gritty excellence by Charlize Theron, would be getting a prequel film of her own - this time starring Anya Taylor-Joy in the role.

After COVID delayed production over the last couple of years, it has finally been confirmed by actor Chris Hemsworth that Furiosa is underway. In a tweet yesterday, Hemsworth posted a picture of the clapboard for the film against a barren landscape and cloudy skies with the caption:

"A new journey in the Mad Max saga begins #FURIOSA"

Little is known about the storyline, other than it being a prequel narrative about the one-armed heroine's early life in the wastelands. Even the casting has not been forthcoming; other than Angus Sampson, Nathan Jones (both of whom were in Fury Road), and Tom Burke, we do not know what actors will be featured in this film.

One thing is pretty certain, though: George Miller's flair for the dramatic, well-orchestrated stunts, hair-singeing explosions, and sharp digital effects all make for plenty reason to see Furiosa on the big screen.

Since the film is in the early shooting stage, there is no definitive release date, but it is currently anticipated for May 24th, 2024.
