Six: The Musical  gave the 2022 Tony Awards a histo-remix.

Six: The Musical is the rocking, concert-style musical that tells the story of the six wives of Henry VIII through the lens of a contentious girl-group, battling to see who should be the lead singer based on who was the most mistreated by their notorious ex.

Last night, the show was awarded the Tony for Best Original Score. This win was notably historic, as Toby Marlow, one of the partnership behind this victory, became the first openly non-binary person to take home a Tony win for Best Original Score.

The show Six is about giving a voice to those who have been silenced through the years, so this triumphant take-home is a victory of meta proportions. Marlow spoke in the Tony's press room, exclaiming:

"It just feels really amazing to be part of a season where there's so much queerness on stage explicitly...Representation is pretty fab."

This incredible musical has taken on a life of its own. It started as a creation by Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss while they were still students at Oxford. After an incredibly successful run, the young writing team saw their show on the West End, back when they were only twenty three - a fantastic testament to what you can do when you have something amazing to say.

After the cast's breathtaking Tony performance, host of the night Ariana DeBose specifically pulled over the performer that rocked the house as Jane Seymour, Mallory Maedke, to sing her praises.

Maedke is the show's dance captain, who stepped into the role as Abby Mueller tested positive for Covid-19 just a few short hours before. After a year of theatre that could not have happened without the incredible work of swings and understudies, we are glad Maedke got the acknowledgement that she deserved (and we hope Mueller feels better soon!)

Congratulations to the cast, crew, and creatives of Six: The Musical!
