Following the departure statement that shocked horror fans, Neve Campbell reveals what led to her decision to drop her iconic role in "The Scream".

The horror actress, who has starred in all five films of "The Scream", announced in June that she would not be returning for the sixth installment of the franchise. Campbell, known for her role as protagonist Sidney Prescott, stated that "it's been a very difficult decision to move on" from her involvement with the films for 25 years.

Campbell tells People in an interview that the reason for her leaving the franchise was "negotiation" related in terms of her salary. "In my soul, I just couldn't do that. I couldn't walk on set feeling that - feeling undervalued and feeling the unfairness, or lack of fairness, around that," Campbell said.

The 48-year-old actress further explained that the offer that was presented to her did not equate to the big value she brought to the franchise, and claims that there were inequalities in terms of salaries.

"As a woman in this business, I think it's really important for us to be valued and to fight to be valued," Campbell added. "I honestly don't believe that if I were a man and had done five installments of a huge blockbuster franchise over 25 years, that the number that I was offered would be the number that would be offered to a man."

'Sidney Prescott' May Return To 'The Scream'

Campbell tells Entertainment Tonight that she cares about these movies and the new directors, saying "They did such a great job on the last one and I wish them luck".

When asked about the possibility of her returning as Sidney Prescott, however, the actress stated: "If they were to come to me with an amount that felt in keeping with... the value that I bring them, I would certainly consider it."

What Will Happen To 'The Scream 6'?

A month after Scream (2022) hit theaters, its sequel, "Scream 6" was given the go-signal and began production in the summer of 2022, making this the shortest wait time between installments for the franchise.

As of now, casts from previous installments are said to return for the next sequel. To name a few: Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Hayden Panettiere, Jasmin Savoy-Brown, and Courtney Cox will be reprising their roles. Scream 6 is set to premiere on March 31, 2023.

For the retired "The Scream" star, Campbell currently stars on the popular Netflix series "The Lincoln Lawyer" and will next appear in the live-action video game adaptation of "Twisted Metal".
