LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - OCTOBER 13: (L-R) Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys attend a special screening of “The Harder They Fall” at the Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall on October 13, 2021 in Los Angeles, California.

Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz continue to maintain harmony in their marriage after 13 years.

In PEOPLE's latest digital cover, the "Girl on Fire" singer discussed how she and her producer husband, Swizz Beatz, have thrived by prioritizing effective communication in their relationship.

"I spent a lot of relationships not really saying how I actually felt, and they fell apart," Keys, 43, said. "If you can't speak your truth, then you can't be yourself. That's a key! I don't worry about speaking to him, even about the hard things, and I think he feels the same. I know that I can tell him what I really feel."

The couple, married in 2010, are parents to sons Egypt and Genesis, alongside Beatz's children from previous relationships.

"My husband — every second, it's noise. But that's him, and I love it," Keys said. "He is the best DJ in the universe, and we walk down the street, and it's a party. It's amazing."
