A 4.8 earthquake rattled New York City and the surrounding area Friday morning. 

The quake occurred at approximately 10:20 a.m.   

According to CBS, the earthquake was centered near Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, a city located 40 miles west of New York City.

No reports of damages or injuries have been reported.   

The rattling of buildings was felt throughout the Tri-State Area, including New Jersey and Long Island. Philadelphia, Connecticut and Westchester, New York, also felt the shaking, ABC-7 reports. Earthquakes between 2.5 and 5.4 magnitudes are typically felt, but only cause minor, if any, damage.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, how her "team is assessing impacts and any damage that may have occurred, and we will update the public throughout the day."

Eric Adams, NYC's mayor, has reportedly been briefed on the quake. 

"While we do not have any reports of major impacts at this time, we're still assessing the impact," Fabien Levy, NYC's deputy mayor for communications, wrote online

He suggested: "In case of an aftershock, drop to the floor, cover your head and neck, and take additional cover under a solid piece of furniture, next to an interior wall, or in a doorway."

"We will be updating the public very soon with additional updates," Levy continued.

Ground stops after the quake have been issued at John F. Kennedy International Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport, NY-1 reports.
