Earvin "Magic" Johnson advised his son Earvin III "EJ" Johnson to not appear in reality shows out of fear for his life.

National Enquirer reported on Tuesday that after "EJ" came out publicly in April, he has been extended multiple offers for his own reality show. According to a source, EJ's NBA legend father has asked him to decline the offers out of fear he will be made fun of or possibly receive death threats.

"Magic and (his wife) Cookie say they're very proud of EJ, but they're also realistic," a family friend told the publication.

The couple is concerned that their 21-year-old son, who currently attends New York University, might get assaulted over his sexuality.

"They know there are folks out there who still hate gay people, and it would break their hearts to hear their son got attacked or even injured just for being himself," the insider said.

"Magic knows firsthand how horrible the public can be," said the insider, who revealed the wealthy businessman was taunted when he announced he was HIV-positive in 1991.

The source revealed several NBA players protested Earvin playing for the league before he retired.

"Magic and Cookie want to protect EJ so he doesn't experience the same hurtful things they did. They're hoping he takes their advice to continue to live his life to the fullest - just not on TV," added the insider.

EJ came out publicly for the first time when he held hands with his boyfriend on the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles, Calif. in April as he was briefly interviewed by TMZ. He displayed major PDA with his unidentified beau on-camera. His parents expressed their love for their middle son immediately. The NBA legend told TMZ he and his wife, Earlitha "Cookie" Kelly, "love EJ and support him in every way" and that they are "very proud of him."
