Actor Charlie Hunnam has been confirmed for a role that has the potential to make him into a superstar.

"The gorgeous and talented Charlie Hunnam will be Christian Grey in the film adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey," the book's author, E. L. James, tweeted on Monday.

He will star alongside actress Dakota Johnson, who has played in The Five-Year Engagement and 21 Jump Street. Johnson will play the female lead, Anastasia Steele. Learn more about Johnson here.

The 33-year-old is known for his bad boy role as Jax Teller in the FX hit Sons of Anarchy since 2008. The British actor has also starred in the films Pacific Rim, The Ledge and Abandon.

Some fans took to Twitter to express their support for the casting news regarding Hunnam.

"Charlie Hunnam as Christian Grey just made my entire year," wrote one user.

"Charlie Hunnam as Christian Grey ... I will see this movie solely because of him," tweeted another.

"Really happy for Charlie Hunnam getting 50 Shades lead, but bummed because I came this close. Now I have to return all that used leather," actor Josh Gad tweeted.

Many others, however, were far from supportive of Hunnam's big role.

"I love Charlie Hunnam on Sons but I will maybe shun him forever if he plays in a 50 Shades of Grey movie," The Huffington Post's Paige Lavender tweeted.

"The actor playing Christian grey is not cute at all, Charlie Hunnam better step it up before the movie comes out in August," tweeted another user.

"Charlie hunnam not fit for the role you made your biggest mistake," another tweeted to the book's author.
