Jay-Z says Obama Did the Right Thing Supporting Gay Marriage
Jay-Z said in an interview with CNN's Poppy Harlow Tuesday that President Barack Obama did the right thing when he announced his support for gay marriage.
"I've always thought it as something that was still, um, holding the country back," Jay-Z said. "What people do in their own homes is their business and you can choose to love whoever you love. That's their business. [It] is no different than discriminating against blacks. It's discrimination plain and simple."
When he was asked whether he thought Obama's stand on gay marriage would cost him votes, specially from African Americans, the rapper said:
"I think it's the right thing to do, so whether it costs him votes or not - again, it's not about votes. It's about people. It's the right thing to do as a human being.”
Last week Obama became the first president to back gay marriage in the country.
"I think same-sex couples should be able to get married," Obama said in an interview with ABC News.
Jay-z is not the first celebrity to support the President. Lady Gaga, Ellen DeGeneres, Alec Baldwin and Justin Bieber are among those who also applauded the President.
But there have been famous stars who oppose the Presidents view, including boxer Manny Pacquiao.
