Tom Hardy is the prime candidate for the role of John Connor in the fifth installment of the Terminator series, according to a report by The Hollywood Reporter.

The publication also gave out some information about Arnold Schwarzenegger's role in the film.

While no negotiations between Hardy and the producers of the film are currently underway, Paramount is looking to pursue the actor for the lead role. According to sources, the film's rumored director Alan Taylor has Hardy on top of his wish list for John's character.

The other big reveal was Shwarzenegger's role in the film. It was previously announced that the actor would be involved in the project but would not be reprising his role as protagonist from the past films. It seems like the action star will play a "protector Terminator," who is needed to guard John's mother, Sarah Connor.

Recently, reports that Garrett Hedlund and Emilia Clarke may be up for the roles of John and Sarah Connor for Terminator 5, surfaced on the internet.

It is also rumored that three actresses -- Emila Clarke, Brie Larson (21 Jump Street), and Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street) -- were being appraised for Sarah Connor's role. The film website, Shmoes Knows, also suggested that Hedlund and Boyd Holbrook (The Host) were being considered for the role of John.

While Taylor (Thor: The Dark World) is the rumored director of the film, the filmmaker hasn't given any confirmation yet.

"For publicity, I think I'm doing everybody a favor to leave it as a rumor," Taylor told Film School Rejects.

In a previous interview, the director said his inspiration for the fifth installment of Terminator 5 came from the lasting effect the Batman franchise had on him.

"We all love the first two and I actually went back and watched them again and my respect level only went up. I think there is another famous franchise that had a wonderful beginning and then turned a little bananas," he said. "Tim Burton's first Batman is just glorious and by the time it got around to nipples on costumes and all that stuff it sort of lost its way."

Terminator 5 is scheduled for release on July 1, 2015.
