Miley Cyrus was one of the most talked about celebrities of 2013 and her performance at this year's MTV Video Music Awards was one of the main reasons.

Cyrus entered the stage sporting a leotard with a teddy bear logo and immediately stuck out her now famous tongue. Surrounded by teddy bears, the star twerked and also slapped the butt of a female dancer.

The former Disney star then took off the leotard to show off nude-colored undergarments. She also backed it up on Robin Thicke, who eventually joined her on stage to perform his hit Blurred Lines.

Her performance received tons of criticism, including backlash from the Parents Television Council, an advocacy group that was not amused.

"MTV has once again succeeded in marketing sexually charged messages to young children using former child stars and condom commercials -- while falsely rating this program as appropriate for kids as young as 14," the group's Director of Public Policy, Dan Isett, said in a statement. "This is unacceptable."

MSNBC's Morning Joe host Mika Brzezinski also completely bashed the young star on air.

"The whole thing was cringe-worthy, but I feel bad for her. She is a mess," he said. "Someone needs to take care of her. Someone needs not to put her onstage and make a complete fool of herself. It was pathetic, desperate, sick. She's clearly disturbed. She doesn't look healthy."

Cyrus, on the other hand, didn't seem bothered by the negative comments.

"Smilers! My VMA performance had 306.000 tweets per minute. That's more than the blackout or Superbowl!" she tweeted at the time.
