O'Brien made the announcement at his late night show's studio. He starts by unveiling a bunch of award trophies -- the Oscar, Golden Globes, the BAFTA, the SAG, the Peadbody, and the Nobel Peace Prize --  sitting on his desk, suggesting that they are some of the most "prestigious awards an artist can receive."

"People work their entire lives to earn just one of these incredible awards, but if you ask me they are all garbage!" O'Brien vehemently declares knocking them off his table with one fell swoop of his hand. And then he brings out the MTV movie award trophy, designed as a golden pocorn bucket, stating that it was the only award that mattered.

"Ah! The golden popcorn isn't she beautiful!" he says as he goes on to declare that he will be fulfilling his lifelong dream of hosting the award ceremony.

O'Brien has hosted the Emmy awards on two occasions (2002 and 2006) in the past.

As O'Brien's sidekick, Andy Richter, went onto make the more official announcement, he states that audiences needn't worry as True Detective and Walking Dead won't be on that night. He said that while Game of Thrones is on that night, repeats will be on.
