Interconnected movie series have become increasingly popular in a film world where sequels and pre-established characters dominate.

Alex Kurtzman Talks Sleepy Hollow

There's the Marvel Universe, headlined by The Avengers, and DC is trying to do the same thing now en route to an eventual Justice League movie featuring beloved characters such as Batman and Superman. On Wednesday, Deadline reported that Universal is trying to get into that game as well, but they are doing it with their large backlog of iconic movie monsters.

Some of the characters in question include Dracula, Frankenstein, The Wolf Man, and The Mummy, so obviously there is a history with these characters that makes it easier to take on such a massive project. The project is being helmed by Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan. Kurtzman, with his former writing partner Robert Orci, wrote on the Star Trek reboot and The Amazing Spider-Man, amongst others. Morgan has written five of the films in the The Fast and the Furious franchise.

The plan is to release a series of connected movies based around these characters, although they might not want to run out some of their lesser-known characters, and this is another movie franchise with a limited amount of female characters at their disposal. The process will begin with the reboot of The Mummy, which is scheduled to come out April 22, 2016. The Marvel Universe has given us some of the most popular, most lucrative movies of all-time, and Universal will hope that this new monster universe will be able to have a similar positive impact for the studio.
