Teresa was recently sentenced to 15 months in federal prison while Joe was given three years after the couple pleaded guilty to several fraud charges earlier this year.

Cohen said Thursday, "They are going to be apart for a long time. I think they've got a really strong bond, but it's just so hard...For both of them, family comes first, and they're family. They've been together for years. They're high school sweethearts," he said at the Friends of Hudson River Park charity gala.

Cohen went on to reveal what he found most shocking about the ordeal. He said that he was surprised the couple did not show up to their sentencing with all of their paperwork. Had they done so, Cohen said he believes Teresa could have walked away with lesser or possibly even no jail time at all.

"I was kind of looking at her thinking, wondering if that had to happen."

Cohen also dished a little about the highly anticipated reunion special that will feature Teresa and Joe as well has her The Real Housewives of New Jersey co-stars.

Teresa will start her sentence on January 5. Joe will begin his when she is finished.
