Running for office and having kids could both be on former first daughter Chelsea Clinton's to-do list in the near future.

The child of President Bill Clinton opened up about those topics and more in a new in-depth interview with Vogue.

Clinton said her mother, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, can't wait for grandchildren and though Chelsea wants to accomplish a little more for herself before having kids, she and husband Marc Mezvinsky keep them in mind.

"It's certainly something that Marc and I talk a lot about," she said. "I always knew I was the center of my parents' lives when I was growing up. And I am determined that our children feel the same way. Marc and I are both working really hard right now, but I think in a couple of years, hopefully ... literally, God willing. And I hope my mom can wait that long."

Her mother is also the reason for a big shift in Clinton's consciousness about running for public office. The 32-year-old said she never thought politics could be for her until Hillary's 2008 run for the presidency, in which her daughter had an active role.

"Before my mom's campaign, I would have said no," Chelsea said about a campaign of her own. However, in recent years, she may have changed her mind.

"I believe that engaging in the political process is part of being a good person. And I certainly believe that part of helping to build a better world is ensuring that we have political leaders who are committed to that premise, " she said. "So if there were to be a point where it was something I felt called to do and I didn't think there was someone who was sufficiently committed to building a healthier, more just, more equitable, more productive world? Then that would be a question I'd have to ask and answer."

Holding office would be new for the Clinton daughter, but she's certainly familiar with the media scrutiny that comes with it. She lived out her teenage years under a microscope in the White House and she's faced her fair share of personal attacks, including scathing comments from right-wing radio host Rush Limbaugh.

"In 1993 he said  . . . 'You may know that the Clintons have a cat, Socks, in the White House. They also have a dog.' And then he put a picture of me on the screen," she said.

For now, Chelsea is staying busy pursuing a Ph.D. in international studies and teaching graduate classes at Columbia University.
