Carter revealed that she actually knew Ava would be a major focus in this final season "halfway through last season."

She shared she was told there was big reasoning to putting her character behind bars just so she'd be brought back into the madness of Harlan.

"She was a good person who had to do a lot of hard things to survive in jail," Carter said of Ava's time in jail, adding, "We saw her become a little more calculating and a little less human. She brought that out of jail with her."

She also admitted that she believes "Ava just wants to start over somewhere she can breathe and be at peace. I like the idea that she still holds on to that hope."

As previously mentioned, Ava and Raylan did kiss, yet Carter said, "I didn't feel like this was as romantic as it was desperate. He offers her the option she desires - 'I can help you get somewhere you can start over.' She wants to believe him, but she's very scared. And he wants to make sure she's okay before he leaves her alone, because she's already run away once.

"It all happened spontaneously, and it turned into a great scene," she divulged about kissing Olyphant, adding, "The characters have this chemistry and history, so there's always the possibility of a romance between them."

Justified is airing now on FX at 10 p.m. ET on Tuesdays.
