Lindsay Lohan is in hot water again amid allegations she lied to police about a car accident this summer, but a source says all the commotion following the wreck confused Lohan so much that she doesn't remember what she said to police.

Lohan was on the way to the set of her upcoming Lifetime film "Liz & Dick" in June when her Porsche collided with an 18 wheeler. The car's airbags deployed and caused minor injuries to Lohan and her assistant, Gavin Doyle.

After arriving at the hospital, Lohan reportedly told police she was not driving the Porsche at the time of the accident. She has since been accused of lying to the cops, and she will likely be formally charged for that crime soon.

But a source close to Lohan says all the commotion surrounding the accident and trip to the hospital overwhelmed the actress, who was interviewed by police before her lawyer arrived, and said Lohan can't remember exactly what she told the officers.

"There was a lot of commotion in the emergency room, and Lindsay was extremely upset and concerned for Gavin, who was also in the car with her. Gavin was bleeding, and Lindsay was just freaking out," the source said. "There were cops coming at her from every angle, and her primary concern was making sure that Gavin was OK. She was also stressed out because she had been en route to the set of 'Liz & Dick.' Lindsay says she was very confused after the accident and would never deliberately lie to the cops."

But if formal charges are pressed against Lohan, she will have to sit through a formal probation hearing, and the consequences could be quite serious, according to a law enforcement insider.

"At the conclusion of the probation hearing prosecutors will ask the judge to sentence Lindsay to significant time in jail - up to one year," the source said. "Prosecutors and cops think there is more than enough evidence for the judge to find Lindsay in violation of probation and are hopeful that this time, she will face the maximum penalty for lying to cops. Remember, the burden is much lower for a probation violation, just the fact that Lindsay will be charged with a crime is enough for her probation to be revoked and sent to jail."
