Identity Theft starring Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy came out in theaters Friday and reviews are already commenting on McCarthy's comedic skills - saying her self-loathing character saved the movie.

As a Florida scam artist, Diana (McCarthy) is a talented liar who steals people's personal information to fill her life with food, shopping sprees and alcohol. Her victim in the film is a Denver accountant named Sandy Patterson (Bateman). Diana is not always funny in the film and not always liked - hundreds of people drinking items she paid for are not her friends and a bartender tells her, "People like you don't have friends."

"The darkness in this comedy is exactly what makes it work so well," Newsday stated in its review of the film. "McCarthy, poised to become the new John Belushi after playing the flagrantly flatulent Megan in Bridesmaids, here emerges as something closer to John Candy -- an extra-large talent whose heart matches her size."

The film was written by Craig Mazin (The Hangover Part II) and directored by Seth Gordon (Horrible Bosses). The film review added that the jokes sometimes feel mean "but McCarthy somehow always retains her dignity" and she gives the film its "winning personality."

The New York Times could not agree more and praised McCarthy by calling her "the movie's bliss." The comedy about a "a naughty woman and the uptight man she has her way with, has no business being funny," the review stated. However, the jokes hit in the right direction whether they be cruel or not, and McCarthy - at the center of most of them - "is the supernova who burns up this show."

The film also stars Amanda Peet, Jon Favreau, Eric Stonestreet and rapper Tip "T.I." Harris. Watch Identity Theft in theaters now.
