Jenny McCarthy is standing up for cousin and fellow actress, Melissa McCarthy over a harsh critique of her role in the new film Identity Thief. Readers of a New York Observer column believed movie critic Rex Reed crossed the line when he made personal attacks on Melissa’s weight. While on the promotional tour for her new late night talk show, The Jenny McCarthy Show, Jenny spoke out against the jabs, saying the critic can, “go to hell.”

"I don't have the whole story, but, I do know that, after being in this business 20 years, it's really crummy that you get attacked in your personal life in general," she told E! News.

She continued, “Anyone to attack like that is just wrong and hurtful, and it doesn’t do anyone any good. Not even Rex Reed.”

Speaking highly of her cousin who had success in the Bridemaids film, she said, “She’s very, very, very talented and people know that. So, he can go to hell.”

In his harsh critique of the film he calls a trashy, stupefying screenplay by Craig Mazin, Reed attacked on McCarthy’s physical appearance by dishing out a handful of insults. In the excruciating review, Reed refers to McCarthy as Mr. Bateman’s female hippo.

Despite receiving backlash from all angles, the 74-year-old critic refused to retract his harsh statements. He even pegged the attention gained from his harsh critique as the reason for the film’s rapid success. Since it’s Feb 8 release, Identity Thief has earned $47 Million at the box office.

Reed told New York’s WOR-AM on Monday that people should not make him the victim as McCarthy has made her own health issues into a joke.

“I object to using health issues like obesity as comedy talking points. That’s what this girl does, this Melissa Manchester”, he said mistakenly confusing her name. “I have too many friends that have died of obsetiy-related illness, heart problems and diabetes..I have tried to help people to lose weight, and I don’t find this to be the subject of a lot of humor."
