The incident between singer Chris Brown and his ex, singer Rihanna, might have happened more than seven years ago, but details are still slowly coming out about what happened that fateful night Brown assaulted Rihanna in February of 2009.

Record label executive L.A. Reid, who initially signed Rihanna, detailed his account of what happened in his memoir, Sing To Me.

“She was set to perform at the Grammys…The producer of the show reached me in my suite at the Beverly Hills Hotel the day before the Grammys. Rihanna had not showed for the rehearsal, he told me. The next phone call came from a publicist who worked for us. ‘Rihanna just had a car accident,’ she said. ‘That’s all I can tell you right now, but she’s in the hospital.’”

Reid added that he soon found out it actually wasn’t a car accident but rather her situation with Brown had escalated and turned dangerously physical.

“I never knew much more about what happened than the public did. The details were kept from me,” wrote Reid, who revealed he and Rihanna had a “father daughter” relationship.

“I managed to get through to Rihanna at the hospital, but it was a brief conversation. I was able to voice some concern, which I hoped was comforting, but I felt hopeless. She was in bad shape and embarrassed and didn’t want any visitors…It was tragic.”

He said he realized how close he and Rihanna really were when she wanted to come see him in New York. The topic of conversation steered clear of what happened with Brown and focused on her career.

“My only advice to her was to turn to music – it sounded cliché but that was what had gotten me through dark times. She stayed for hours….”
