Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt have more to say about their time on The Hills.

The reality series premiered a decade ago and the real-life couple opened up on how they've been doing since their time away. Neither Montag nor Pratt were seen in the best light on the series, but Pratt pointed out in Monday's report from Entertainment Tonight that their bizarre ways helped make the show what it was.

"You need to make very controversial television to stay on the air, at the cost of my identity," he said. "At the end of the day, the show was getting canceled after season one, you know, if I didn't come in and create this, like, back and forth-- and that's not ego-- that's, like, the network told me, 'Oh, this show is getting pulled after season one.' They needed a bad guy. I stepped in there and took a hit for the team."

One particular drama that took place on the show was the fallout between Montag and her then-best friend Lauren Conrad. Despite the fact that they had a rough ending, Pratt said he does not "hate" her.

"I don't have the energy to hate people," he said. "I try not to have that type of energy."

The same goes for Montag who said she's spoken with Conrad a "few times" since their time on the show.

"I love Lauren," Montag said. "She really was my best friend for a long time and I wish that it never had to happen like this. I think that other cast members were excited for our fallout because it was Lauren and I, like, we were inseparable best friends. I think a lot of people took that as an opportunity."
