Good news for emoji aficionados around the world. The Unicode Consortium, the governing body which approves and rejects emojis before they are released to consumers, has just approved a set of 72 new emojis, which is set to be rolled out to the Unicode 9.0 standard later this month. Thus, it will not be long before users around the world get to see the new set of emojis hit their phones.

Among the notable additions to the emoji lineup is some much-needed imagery to correspond to the ever-evolving Internet slang. Thus, emojis for ROFL (rolling on the floor laughing) and the popular shrug (¯_(ツ)_/¯) commonly found in text messages nowadays would soon be added to the official emoji lineup.

Emojis featuring a face with cowboy hats, a Pinocchio-esque lying face, a drooling face and a variety of sick faces will also be included in the update. Apart from faces, the new update will also include several cool hand gestures, such as the famous selfie and the fingers crossed emoji.

Those who are fond of using food emojis will be able to play around new images such as pancakes, green salads and even bacon. Lastly, a number of emojis pertaining to popular drinks will also be included in the upcoming update this June.

As much as the new emojis are great and they are scheduled to be included in the official emoji lineup, however, users should not expect the new emojis to appear on their mobile devices right away.

This is because after the 72 new emojis are added to the Unicode 9.0 lineup on June 21, smartphone manufacturers such as Apple, Microsoft and Google would still need to add the updated emoji lineup to their mobile OS. Thus, the arrival of the 72 new emojis would ultimately fall to the hands of smartphone-makers, who would be tasked to release the emojis through a software update.
