Though its alleged sequel did not make it to E3 2016, Red Dead Redemption has been confirmed for backward compatibility on the Xbox One starting on Friday. The announcement has been embraced warmly by fans, as shown by the title's sudden surge on Amazon's Movers and Shakers in Video Games rankings.

Prior to the announcement, Red Dead Redemption Game of the Year Edition, which includes Undead Nightmare, was ranked 1,583 on the e-commerce giant's list. After the backward compatibility announcement, the title surged to the number 22 spot in the list, exhibiting a drastic 7,000 percent increase.

While the massive surge does not really reflect the actual increase in the game's sales on Amazon, it is nonetheless a very notable testament that fans of the title have taken notice, and they have reacted very positively. After all, Red Dead Redemption is simply one of those titles that have managed to endear itself of a generation of gamers.

Red Dead Redemption ultimately proved to be a massively successful franchise for Rockstar Games, the same firm behind the juggernaut that is the Grand Theft Auto franchise. As much as the RDR game has been a commercial and critical success, however, the sequel that fans have been clamoring for, Red Dead Redemption 2, has proven very elusive.

Though numerous rumors have emerged over the past year about the sequel's alleged development, the developers of the game have been extremely tight-lipped about the project. Rumors ran high during the weeks leading up to E3 2016, alleging that the sequel would finally be officially announced in the gaming event, but the speculations were ultimately proven untrue. E3 2016 ended, and there were no announcements about Red Dead Redemption 2.

With the sequel to the game almost unsure, fans have been very eager to play the game on the Xbox One. Earlier this year, a glitch temporarily made the game backward compatible with the Xbox One. When the glitch was made public, Microsoft was quick to address the error, disappointing numerous fans.

Now, the game is officially backward compatible, and fans of the acclaimed game can finally revisit the classic title, this time with Microsoft's blessing.
