Selena Gomez recently went to rehab, but why?

Last month, Us Weekly confirmed Gomez was receiving treatment in a "super intense" facility outside of Nashville, Tennessee.

“Selena is dealing with Lupus, but this break is to focus on her mental health,” a source close to the pop star told the magazine. “She can go to a very dark place.”

The outlet's report came just weeks after Gomez told People Magazine that she had begun to struggle with anxiety, depression and panic attacks.

“As many of you know, around a year ago I revealed that I have lupus, an illness that can affect people in different ways,” she said in a statement in August. “I’ve discovered that anxiety, panic attacks and depression can be side effects of lupus, which can present their own challenges.”

Gomez confirmed her battle with Lupus one year prior.

Following her statement, Kenneth M. Farber, the co-CEO and co-president of the Lupus Research Alliance, told People “it is not commonly known that depression, anxiety and panic attacks can be side effects of lupus. We are so proud of Selena for taking care of herself and bringing awareness to this sometimes very misunderstood illness.”

As Business Insider revealed this week, the disease can also lead to symptoms, including swollen joints, fever, fatigue, rashes, chest pain, hair loss, anemia, and more.

During Sunday's American Music Awards, Gomez told fans, "I had to stop, ’cause I had everything and I was absolutely broken inside and I kept it all together enough to where I would never let you down, but I kept it too much together, to where I let myself down. But, if you are broken, you do not have to stay broken. That's one thing you should know about me: I care about people. And this is for you."
