George Michael was airlifted to a hospital in the United Kingdom after he was involved in a car crash on Thursday, but was not seriously harmed.

A representative for the Father Figure singer released a statement saying that Michael was a passenger in a Range Rover that crashed on the M1 motorway in England at around 5:50 PM local time. The rep did not know what caused the crash and that no other vehicles were involved. The spokesperson added that the music icon only suffered superficial cuts.

"[George] sustained a head injury and following treatment, stabilisation and immobilization by land and air ambulance crews, he was flown to the hospital for further care," rep for the emergency response crew said.

The driver of the car has not been identified but this is the latest crash that Michael has been involved in over the past couple of years.  Michael crashed his car into a Snappy Snaps photography shop in Hampstead, North London, in July of 2010. Charges were filed against him for the crash after he admitted to smoking cannabis the previous night, and taking a newly prescribed sedative and the anti-anxiety pill Amitriptyline.

In September 2010, Michael was jailed for eight weeks as a result of driving under the influence of drugs. A judge in the U.K. said that the singer was not treating his drug addiction in a responsible manner. His lawyer told the court at the time that Michael was apologetic for his actions.

"The prospect he could have put anyone else in danger is an appalling prospect to him," Mukul Chawla QC said.

District Judge John Perkins was not convinced of Michael's sincerity and noted during sentencing that the singer's record was a concern for him. Michael was cited twice for possession of cannabis in 2006, and convicted in 2007 when he was disqualified from driving for two years for his first offense of driving while under the influence.

"Despite the resources at your command, it does not appear that you took proper steps to deal with what's clearly an addiction to cannabis," the judge said in his ruling.

In addition to the jail term, Michael was also ordered to pay a fine and was banned from driving for five years.
