Charlie Sheen Changes Name; Uses Latino Birth Name 'Carlos Estevez' in Rodriguez Film 'Machete Kills' (REPORT)

Charlie Sheen used his birth name Carlos Estevez in the new Robert Rodriguez film Machete Kills, according to TMZ.

It is the first time in the actor's career he was not billed as Charlie Sheen. Director Rodriguez' films, such as El Mariachi, Desperado and Machete, often celebrate Latino pride.

Martin Sheen, Charlie's father, was born Ramón Antonio Gerardo Estevez from his Spanish father's side. He made up "Martin Sheen" to get acting jobs but never changed his name legally. He passed his last name by birth, Estevez, to all four of his children.

Martin has said he regrets not using his real name as an actor.

Charlie portrays the U.S. president in the campy thriller about a rampaging Mexican assassin.

In the film, the U.S. government recruits Machete, played by Danny Trejo, to battle his way through Mexico in order to take down an arms dealer who looks to launch a weapon into space.

Cast members include Mel Gibson, Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez, Vanessa Hudgens, Antonio Banderas, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Lady Gaga.

Charlie was most recently seen alongside Lindsay Lohan and Ashley Tisdale in the film Scary Movie 5, which opened in April to a poor audience reception. The sequel attracted just $5.8 million on its opening night.

The previous film in the franchise, 2006's Scary Movie 4, managed a much healthier $40.2m opening weekend in the U.S. and a global total of $178.3 million.

The substantial drop in box office reception suggested audiences are becoming tired of the parody genre.

The first Scary Movie made $278 million in 2000, but more recent spoofs Meet The Spartans and Vampires Suck barely earned above $80 million despite being based on blockbuster films. In 2008, Disaster Movie earned just $34.8 million.

Scary Movie 5's saving grace was that with a budget of just $20 million, it stood a good chance of making its money back.

Machete Kills is scheduled to be released in the U.S. September 2013.
