Shannon Beador and her husband, David, parted ways a little over a month ago.

According to a new interview, the longtime reality star confirmed the news of her split to her Real Housewives of Orange County co-stars during the taping of the Season 12 reunion special last week.

“It’s heartbreaking for me and my daughters that this is the road that had to be taken but it’s the only way,” Beador explained to PEOPLE magazine ahead of her on-camera reveal, which will air next month on Bravo TV. “I felt alone in my marriage. You can do what you can to keep your family together, but you have to have willing parties. You need two people to make a marriage work, and that just wasn’t happening in our relationship.”

While Shannon and David Beador have experienced tons of shocking moments in their marriage on The Real Housewives of Orange County, including the moment when David confirmed he had engaged in a months-long affair with someone else, the reality star was still “crushed” that they weren't able to work through their issues.

“This is not the path that I thought that I would be taking,” she said. “To come from the highest of the highs last year to go to such a low so quickly? At the beginning when it starts to crumble, you think, ‘This is just a phase. It’ll get better.’ But it never did.”

After David admitted to having an affair, he and his wife underwent counseling and ultimately chose to renew their vows. Then, just a short time later, their marriage was once again in the news as Vicki Gunvalson claimed she had learned he was abusive towards Beador during their 17-year marriage.

Although the Beadors have decided to end their relationship, they are dedicated to co-parenting their three daughters and, as Beador explained to PEOPLE magazine, the kids are their primary concern.

“I’m a strong person,” Beador continued of her future. “At this point it’s scary, when you’re 53 years old, to be out there on your own. But I intend to show myself and my daughters that it can be done. I’m ready to get the old Shannon back, that’s for sure.”
