The force is strong with Star Wars: The Last Jedi!. The eighth film in the popular space opera franchise earned over $220 million during its opening weekend.

'The Last Jedi' Soars

Star Wars: The Last Jedi set an all-time opening weekend record. The franchise's eighth film received high marks from critics and sent Carrie Fisher's General Leia Organa into the sunset with class and grandeur.

The film, which is directed and written by Rian Johnson brought numerous classic franchise elements into the mix. Johnson also introduced the audience to breakout characters such as Kelly Marie Tran's Rose Tico and Benicio del Toro's DJ, which could potentially headline his next Star Wars trilogy.

'Ferdinand' Trumps 'Coco'

Star Wars: The Last Jedi's box office triumph sends Disney-Pixar's Coco to third place on the list. The Day of the Dead-themed 3D animated musical, which initially spent three weeks at the top of the box office, took home another $10 million.

Coco would have been in second place if Blue Sky Studios did not release its own 3D animated family film, Ferdinand. The film that features the voices of John Cena, Kate McKinnon, and David Tennant took home $13.3 million in its debut weekend.

'Wonder' And 'Justice League' Falter

Julia Roberts, Owen Wilson, and Jacob Tremblay's Wonder slid down to the number four spot on the weekend box office report. The inspirational family film earned $5.4 million this weekend.

Meanwhile, Justice League rounds out the top five films with $4.2 million. Warner Bros. Pictures' superhero film that featured Batman (Ben Affleck) and Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) recruiting DC Comics' ultimate heroes to save the world failed to meet the studio's high expectations. The studio has forced DC Films to undergo a major company reorganization.

Award Season Update

Two films that are part of the current Hollywood film award season continued to find themselves on the weekend box office report. The Disaster Artist, which focuses on Tommy Wiseau's behind-the-scenes hijinks to bring The Room back to life earned $2.6 million. The film has received its star and director James Franco numerous nominations in several major film awards.

Greta Gerwig's directorial debut, Lady Bird,  earned $2.1 million and occupied the 10th spot on the Top 10 Weekend Box Office list. Lady Bird has picked up four Golden Globe nominations.

The Remaining 3 Films

Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg's latest buddy comedy, Daddy's Home 2, earned $3.8 million and the sixth spot on the list. Meanwhile, Thor: Ragnarok took home seventh place and $3 million.

Lastly, Murder on the Orient Express received $2.5 million and was sandwiched in between The Disaster Artist and Lady Bird in the weekend box office.
