Depression is a mental illness that affects all corners of society. In fact, it almost took down The Rock, following a devastating incident with his mother.

A Lifelong Struggle

Actor Dwayne Johnson, AKA The Rock, opened up about his secret battle with depression after his mother's attempted suicide.

The former WWE wrestler, who is also currently the highest paid actor in Hollywood, did not mince words when it came to describing the struggle.

"Struggle and pain is real. I was devastated and depressed. I reached a point where I didn't want to do a thing or go anywhere. I was crying constantly," Johnson admitted.

The 45-year-old actor was just 15 when his mother, Ata, tried to kill herself in front of him. The two had been evicted from their home when the incident occurred.

"She got out of the car on Interstate 65 in Nashville and walked into oncoming traffic. I grabbed her and pulled her back on the gravel shoulder of the road," he said.

The actor explained his mother doesn't remember the incident, and it's probably better that way. He makes it his mission to help out others who are in pain, even replying to a fan to let him know he wasn't alone.

"We both healed but we've always got to do our best to pay attention when other people are in pain. We have to help them through it and remind them they are not alone," he said.

Banking The Big Bucks

Johnson, whose net worth is estimated to be $220 million, learned the value of money after struggling throughout his childhood as his mother tried to make ends meet.

His new movie, sci-fi blockbuster Rampage, which is based on the classic eighties video-game of the same name, hits theaters later this month.

Johnson has been Hollywood's highest paid actor for two consecutive years and looks to continue that streak when the film drops. The marketing campaign for the said film revolves around the actor's considerable size.

Johnson went through several personal struggles, including his dreams of being a professional football player coming to an end following numerous injuries, before he hit it big with the WWE.

After a successful career as one of the most famous and beloved wrestlers in the world, Johnson turned his attention to acting in the year 2000 and has carved out a remarkable career for himself there. His latest flick, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle was a massive box office hit worldwide.

Although nothing has been confirmed as of yet, Johnson is rumored to make an appearance as The Rock at Wrestlemania in New Orleans this coming weekend.
