Fox Searchlight Pictures recently released the trailer for Jennifer Hudson's new movie Black Nativity.

In the preview, Hudson is heard singing a heartfelt rendition of the Christmas classic Silent Night.

Directed by Kasi Lemmons, the movie is based on Langston Hughes' gospel musical, which has the same name and was first performed off-Broadway in 1961. The film tells the story of a Baltimore teen who spends the holidays with his estranged grandparents who live in Harlem after he and his mother have been evicted from their home. His single mother is struggling to make ends meet and is attempting to put her life together.

Hudson and the rest of the cast began filming the movie during the winter season in New York City. See photos from February here.

"It's a musical and has kind of a Christmas feel to it," Hudson told The Chicago Tribune in a December 2012 interview. "All of those things intrigued me and made me want to be a part of it."

This will be another singing role Hudson can add to her resume. She has played a Broadway singer during season 2 of NBC's show Smash. In and starred in the 2006 film Dreamgirls alongside Beyonce and Jamie Foxx. In the movie the 31-year-old sung the powerful song And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going, which she also performed at the 2013 Oscar Awards.

"It has to be something I feel connected to or have a passion to do," she told the publication about her movie roles. "I don't believe in doing things just to do them. It has to make sense for me to do it. You have to be passionate about it."

Black Nativity comes to U.S. theaters on Nov. 27. The film also stars singer Tyrese Gibson, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker, Mary J. Blige and Nas.
