Meghan Markle has been the talk of the town since she announced her engagement to Prince Harry. However, before she fell for the royal prince, she was reportedly begged for a date by English footballer Ashley Cole.

In an interview she gave with a UK-based journalist six years ago, Meghan revealed that she was then pursued by the ex of Cheryl Tweedy. To back up her claim, TV personality Lizzy Cundy said that she was the one who set-up Meghan to date with Cole after his reported split with Cherryl in 2010.

Lizzy revealed that the two -- Meghan and Ashley -- were an instant hit together at a charity event.

However, as news about how Ashley Cole had to beg the former Suits star for a date came out, his brother, Matty Cole denied it. He said that the news was completely untrue.

"It is completely made up," Matty Cole said, per FOX News.

Matty added that the story was nonsense. He emphasized that his brother didn't have to beg Meghan to go out on a date, pointing out that Meghan was not really his brother's "kind of girl."

"He never fancied her," Cole said bluntly.

However, the journalist that did the interview with Meghan six years ago claimed that Meghan showed her the messages that Ashley sent her. She recalled Meghan showing her a picture of a good looking guy and asked her if she knew who Cole was. The journalist further revealed that the Duchess of Sussex asked her for her opinion of whether she should go out with Ashley.

At that time, Ashley Cole was the star-athlete of Chelsea and was already earning £100,000 a week. But then, he was more popularly known as the ex of the pop princess Cheryl.

Meghan, who was informed of his "cheating past," then decided to cancel all plans of going out with him.

Instead, Markle went on a blind date with Prince Harry. Meghan, who was 32 back then, was just out of a divorce from husband Trevor Engelson.

Did Meghan Markle and Ashley Cole date? Back then, that question meant a lot considering that Meghan just got out of divorce and was trying to move on.

Fortunately for Meghan, the date she had with Prince Harry turned out well. The couple got married in 2018 and are now serving as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
