"She will be missed intensely by her whole family and many friends. We are immensely proud of her many achievements, especially her championing of the causes close to her heart which she supported so effectively during her remarkable lifetime," the family statement said.

Her colleagues, including broadcaster Alastair Stewart and Elaine Mitchell, remembered her life and called her "strong, capable, and good company." In her profile in The Independent, she was called a "Tory feminist" who focused on working on the homelessness of people. She also fought for the protection of children from several issues, including gambling and the internet sexual abuse.

Baroness Howe's death occurred during Prince Charles and Camilla's historic visit to Cookstown, a small town in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. They officially became the first members of the royal family to get to the place.

After their royal engagement in the town, they began their second day of visits to CS Lewis Square in Belfast.
